Awareness-Raising event and reception for the
"Eminent Domain Awareness" Group Show

Tonight's event features legendary Dead Kennedys frontman and activist Jello Biafra, recent Vice Presidential candidate and former SF Board of Supervisors President Matt Gonzalez, newsman and Argonaut Editor Warren Hinckle, live screenprinting by Political Gridlock and The Firehouse, and music by Burnt House and DJ Evil Justin + surprise guest performers!

Join us for an evening of spoken word, live music and art as we raise awareness about Eminent Domain in our neighborhood. Few know that a San Francisco agency, the Transbay Joint Powers Authority, is eliminating 33 small, local businesses, including Varnish, and numerous residences in order to demolish all properties and later resell the land. The TJPA is forcing Varnish, among the first tenants and years before the end of the lease, to vacate this September for an October 2009 demolition of its nearly 100 year old building. This gallery and wine bar will have to vacate 77 Natoma Street, but the owners hope that by raising awareness about this eminent domain threat they can stop its abuses on this and future San Francisco projects.

Showing: “Justice” @ Long Arm Gallery in Bridewell Police Station

One aspect of street art that is particularly attractive is the social commentary that can accompany each piece in meaning and placement. Two artists that have shown interest in bringing attention to different political causes are C215 and Bruno Leyval as evidenced by some of their Tibetian themed art (covered).

For the show “Justice,” they have teamed up with three other artists (Dan23, Least Wanted and MC1984) in a concept show at Long Arm Gallery based on themes of Law and Order that they have been committed to for the past three months. Featuring site specific installations, photography, prints, stencils and a range of new original work, the show is made all the more powerful with its placement within the oppressive environment of the old Bridewell Police Station.

My favorite by far is the work by Dan23. His stuff is just amazing, check out his other work on his site by clicking his name above. Be sure to click the link to Long Arm Gallery to see all the other pictures. If you are in the UK do not miss this show

SYLVIA JI PRINTS NOW AVAILABLE AT COREY HELFORD GALLERY

This looks to be an amazing show. 2 NEW SYLVIA JI PRINTS AVAILABLE pre-orders available at opening or online at rs@coreyhelfordgallery.com
www.coreyhelfordgallery.com

Opening Reception Saturday, April 11 2009 from 7-10pm
On View April 11 - April 28, 2009

Here is a link to the preview some great pieces in there.

Corey Helford Gallery is proud to present “Haute Epoch”, a solo exhibition of new works by highly-collected Los Angeles artist Sylvia Ji. Returning to Corey Helford for her second solo show, Ji continues her evolution in the mastery of capturing the dark side of the beautiful and the sublime. For “Haute Epoch” her work reaches majestic heights as her macabre catrinas intermingle with exotic empresses, taking on a regal elegance. Ji’s imagery is a visual elixir of life and death, combining sacred symbolism with mystical glamour and opulence. Infl uenced by historical costumery, Ji incorporates Baroque detailing such as luxurious tapestries, ornamental
feathers, and gold leafing into her work for a more elaborate and decorative effect. Opening night will include a video presentation by filmmaker Phill Schwartz creating a stunning sensory exploration of Ji’s work. The reception for “Haute Epoch” is open to the public and will take place on Saturday, April 11 from 7 to 10pm. The show will be on view until April 28, 2009.

Sylvia Ji was born in 1982, and raised in San Francisco, California, where she received her BFA at the Academy of Art University. Upon graduation, she relocated to Los Angeles in 2005 where she currently resides. Ji’s work encapsulates an alluring beauty that is both cutting edge and a nod to time-honored technique. Her paintings are symbolic reflections of herself, portraits of people she knows or nameless faces set in a landscape of fleeting and decaying beauty. Possessing an artistic voice as unique as the times we live in, Ji is at once contemplative, spiritual, enigmatic, and yet whimsically funny. Above all else, it is perhaps beauty that emerges as her defining characteristic, and her art reflects this: an extension of herself; a passionate appreciation of simple aesthetic pleasure fused with intimately complex subject matter. Ji’s work has been featured in numerous gallery exhibitions including White Walls, Thinkspace,
Lineage Gallery, BLVD Gallery, and Art Basel’s Art Fair Now. She has been profiled in publications such as Juxtapoz, Trace, and Mesh Magazine, and her painting “Dona Dolorosa” graced the cover of the LA Weekly for a feature story about Juxtapoz magazine’s
Laguna Museum retrospective “In The Land of Retinal Delights”. For more information about Sylvia Ji, please visit sylviaji.com.

Located in the Culver City Art District, Corey Helford Gallery was established in April 2006 by Jan Corey Helford and her husband, television producer and creator, Bruce Helford (The Drew Carey Show, George Lopez, The Oblongs). Passionate art collectors, the Helfords are producers on the art documentary The Treasures of Long Gone John and have partnered to open their first gallery. Corey Helford Gallery presents a wide range of artists, from members of the new fi ne art movement, such as Gary Baseman, Andrew Brandou, Coop, Natalia Fabia, Korin Faught, Sylvia Ji, Eric Joyner, and award-winning photographer Chris Anthony, to early Modernist
William S. Schwartz. Notable shows include “Charity By Numbers”, which was co-curated by Gary Baseman and featured an unprecedented lineup of artists including Mark Ryden, Marion Peck, Shepard Fairey, Todd and Kathy Schorr, Camille Rose Garcia, and Michael Hussar. Corey Helford Gallery presents new exhibitions approximately every four weeks. For more information and an upcoming exhibition schedule, please visit coreyhelfordgallery.com.

The London Police 10th Anniversary Gallery Exhibition

It's amazing to think that it was ten years ago, in 1998, that The London Police art collective started propagating their now iconic "Lads" on city streets across Europe. For us, the London Police and the lads personify the entire street art movement. It's impossible to talk about one without the other.

So to celebrate their 10th Anniversary, this Thursday night, Chaz and Bob (London Police's original team) will open '10 Years On The Circle Line' at the StolenSpace Gallery on Brick Lane in London.

For us, now that Chaz and Bob are back together again making art, the work has never been better. Here's the info on the show:

The Rock & Roll Public Library: Mick Jones of The Clash's memorabilia

From the Telegraph UK

This week, a deeply unusual exhibition has been opened by one of punk rock's surviving legends. Mick Jones was the Clash's lead guitarist, and co-wrote their songs alongside the late, legendary Joe Strummer. Thereafter, he enjoyed success in the Eighties fronting Big Audio Dynamite, and recently resurfaced in a new combo, Carbon/Silicon.

All the while, Jones, an obsessive hoarder of pop-cultural bric-à-brac, has been collecting mementos and promotional items from his own career, as well as thousands of books, records, VHS cassettes, comics, action figures and – one of Jones's favourite pieces – a range of toy soldiers depicting a battle scene from the film, Zulu.

"There's probably only one of these still in existence," he pondered, lovingly smoothing out one of its dog-eared corners. "I must do something with all this stuff one day."

His exhibition, The Rock & Roll Public Library, is that idea come to fruition. In a moderately proportioned gallery, the Chelsea Space, situated just behind Tate Britain, he is displaying a small but enticing sample of his treasures.

As the final few crates of hardbacks were being installed, Jones explained that he was galvanised into action after watching a BBC4 documentary about the film director Stanley Kubrick. Kubrick had assembled hundreds of boxes of personal possessions, which came to light only after his death, when his estate donated them to the London University of the Arts.

"When I saw how enigmatic Stanley was with his boxes," Jones says, "initially I thought, well, yes, you can just have a private collection, but then I came around to thinking that the point is to share the stuff, so that other people can enjoy it. It's still by no means properly sorted, but this is a start."

Many of the artefacts on display will be a mouthwatering sight for Clash fans. The corridor, as you go in, is lined with posters and photos, including a screenprint for Strummer's first band, the 101'ers, and some scruffy photocopies from the fateful summer of 1976.

In the main room, there are gold discs, flight cases stencilled with the Clash's name, backstage passes, badges, magazine covers, handwritten lyric sheets, custom-tailored stage garments, and the odd memo on hotel notepaper from Strummer. "Hello, Mick," says one. "It's Joe. Okay, I give up, you win. Call me. Love, Joe".

"I can't remember if it was important," Jones shrugs, "but the Clash stuff is just part of this. It's about Brooke Bond tea cards as well. It's a shame they don't do cigarette cards any more – at least there would be some point to smoking." He takes a heave on his ever-present roll-up, and giggles. "Look here," – he points to another curious objet – "it's Charles de Gaulle in a pen made out of ivory.

"Some people might think all this stuff has no value whatsoever. Others might think of it as a major cultural document." Jones himself is certainly warming to the latter notion, if always with a mischievous grin. He's also keen to fight against our eBay-driven obsession with financial valuation.

"It does raise questions about categorisation. Is it art? I look at it as one artwork, the whole collection – one piece of art, which I'm continually working on and updating." Against the advice of the Chelsea Space's curator, Donald Smith, he wants visitors to be able to "engage with" his exhibits, to take videos down from the shelves, to leaf through books, and so on.

"Am I worried that people will half-inch things? I don't want that, obviously. I think, if you do that, shame on you. But if it ends up as a free-for-all, so be it. The thing is, this stuff is not for sale. This is to look at and enjoy."

The Rock & Roll Public Library is a wonderfully lurid pop experience, a timely reminder of all the colour and creative design we're missing out on, by storing our pop these days on iPods and mobile phones. In times of looming austerity, it is also gloriously ephemeral, and philanthropic – entrance is free.

Jones hopes that this first run will lead to a full-scale, permanent exhibition. To that end, he invited the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, to the preview (he didn't show up).

"We're looking for funding, an Arts Council grant – whatever's going, really. If someone just wants to give us a building in west London, we'll do the rest. I know it's a mad idea, because no one's really done it before. It's this crazy life, where you just do creative things and you feel excited all the time by the stuff around you."

His eyes take on an idealistic twinkle. "If loads of people could feel like that, things would change."

  • 'The Rock & Roll Public Library' runs at the Chelsea Space, London SW1, until April 18. Info: www.chelseaspace.org
  • A video for Carbon/Silicon's latest recording, 'Reach for the Sky', featuring close-ups of several hundred exhibits, can be seen at: www.carbonsiliconinc.com
